In line with the most recent Scottish Government restrictions that mean visiting another household indoors is not permitted, we are only taking bookings for single households (or extended households) for 2020.

Guests should be scrupulous in following Scottish Government advice to keep everyone safe. These measures include:

  • Face coverings in enclosed or busy places (mandatory in shops and on public transport)
  • Avoid crowded places – so go early or late and be prepared to go elsewhere if necessary
  • Clean hands and surfaces regularly
  • Two metre distancing outside your household group
  • Self isolate and book a test if you have symptoms.

Please bring hand sanitiser and face coverings with you. Decent quality, 3 layer re-useable face coverings at around £2 each (buying 10) are available here and you are of course welcome to use our washing machine to keep face masks clean.

At present under social distancing rules, three households are permitted to meet indoors, with social distancing. Varis is a spacious house where such distancing is possible with care.

Our ‘Covid-19 secure’ cleaning regime

Good to Go logoWe’ve taken careful advice from the Scottish Government and our professional body, the Association of Scottish Self Caterers and keep this under review. Our arrangements have been certified under the national Good to Go scheme.

We are using a range of virucidal, commercial-grade disinfectants (70% alcohol or sodium percarbonate) compatible with our septic tank.  We take extra care of high-touch surface areas, from door handles and light switches to kettles and toasters. We also ensure the cleanliness of upholstery, including armchairs and curtains.  Bed linen and towels will be washed to the highest standards and in accordance with the latest virus-control procedures.  We have two sets of duvets, pillows and throws which are swapped between groups of guests.

We have always provided eco friendly cleaning products and guests are welcome to use these freely.

Arrival has always been a contact-free experience. Guests are welcome to arrive anytime from 6pm on the arrival day, while departure is by 10am on the final day. Between 10am and 6pm, Elizabeth, our housekeeper will work to clean the property. Guests and housekeepers do not meet. We ask guests to strictly adhere to departure and arrival times.  Keys are collected onsite and we carefully disinfect them.

To make cleaning easier, we have removed some decorative items. All kitchenware and crockery will be clean with cutlery, glasses, mugs and core crockery left sanitised in the dishwasher.  Other items will be clean but not necessarily sanitised so we recommend that guests rewash items before use.

Varis has a selection of board games and local information leaflets. We are keeping these available and ask guests to wash their hands before and hands after use. Similarly books.   Important information about the property is presented in plastic folders which we also swap between groups.

To help with our efforts to protect everyone, we ask guests to strip their beds and put our rubbish from all bins at the end of a stay, with easy arrangements in place.

If, during a stay, there is an exceptional reason why we need to visit Varis (for example to rectify an issue), we will give as much notice as possible and adhere to physical distancing rules.  For longer stays, we will arrange a time for a changeover visit when you are not in the house.

If you are unwell …

If you are unwell, do not travel to Varis.  If you become unwell during your stay, Government guidance is for you to arrange a test and travel home to isolate immediately.  Let us know what is happening as soon as possible and we will offer a postponement of your holiday or an appropriate discount for your shorter stay against a future booking.

If you could not travel home to isolate, then the NHS Trace and Protect team will advise and the local Health Protection Team and Highland Council will ensure suitable accommodation is available to isolate safely and effectively.

We’d hate to disappoint subsequent guests but may need to delay their holiday slightly for a deep clean.  If unwell guests extended their stay by agreement, we would charge and do our best to arrange supplies for food and medicines. Guests we are forced to disappoint will always be fully refunded and we will use our contacts to find alternative accommodation.

We will update the information above as changes are made but this accords with Scottish Government advice as of 23rd September. If you have any questions please do just ask.
